Dance with the Devil

Hatter stroked his fingers through Alice's hair. Her hair was smooth and soft and smelt like strawberries. She laid on him on the mahogany leather couch, reading a poetry book from the Great Library. Hatter looked at the book. The scripted words were neat and beautiful, and the ends of letters were in swirls. One of the poems on the page Alice was reading was about the moon. Hatter remembered the author, a well-known Wonderlander.
Hatter smiled at the poem. And then a thought popped into his head. A wondrous thought indeed.

"Hatter! Wait up!" Alice yelled as Hatter dragged her by the hand.
"Trust me Alice, you're gonna wanna see this," Hatter smiled. He head Alice cry out a couple of times when she tripped over. Hatter caught her when she tripped over a large rock.
"Stop laughing Hatter," Alice pouted. He clenched his jaw to stop the giggles coming through. Alice sighed and pulled back a strand of brown hair. "I'm not as fast as you, and you're used to Wonderland's landscape. Ah, why are you smiling like that?"
Hatter scooped her up – but not without her yelling at him – and held her in his arms. She just pouted. Hatter leaned in a whispered in her ear. "Because I love you."
"You're the most cheesiest man alive, you know that?"
"Yes my love, I do."

It took a while to get through the ridiculously tall buildings. Alice complained all the way. They climbed their way up outside steps. The sun was setting. Hatter stopped at the last few steps in front of Alice. He turned to face her with a cheeky grin.
"I want you to close your eyes," he said.
"Why?" Alice asked.
"Trust me," Hatter said as he squeezed her hand. She sighed and closed her eyes.
"This better be worth it," she moaned. Hatter aided her up the last few steps and onto the large rooftop. He wrapped his arms around Alice from behind and rested his head on her shoulder.
"Okay, open," he whispered into her ear. Alice gasped so loudly her world would have heard her. Hatter just had to smile.
There was a full Wonderland moon, but it was like no moon Alice had ever seen in her world, or any world for that matter. It was shinning a beautiful bright white light – yet not bright enough to hurt her eyes – but it was tinged with an ever-changing rainbow glow. And to add to the magic, there was a breathtaking aurora in the sky. The rainbow lights slithered across the sky like a glowing serpent. Alice would've passed out from not breathing if Hatter hadn't had squeezed her.
"Oh Hatter, it's beautiful," she said in awe.
"I'd thought you'd like it," Hatter chuckled, "I had realised that you've never seen a full Wonderland moon. You see, we only get it every three months or so, and I thought before we leave and go back, you'd like to see it."
"Like it? I love it!" Alice laughed. She turned her head and kissed him. She turned her head back around and leaned into Hatter. They stared out at the glorious lights and the marvellous moon. A few moments passed until another wondrous thought popped into Hatter's head.
"Alice, my dear, I must know something," he said. Alice's head turned to look at him, a hint of concern on her face.
"What is it Hatter?" Alice asked. Hatter spun her around and dipped her.
"Have you ever danced with the devil under the pale moon light?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. He spun Alice around again, holding her close to him.
"Can't say I have," she replied, breathing sweet tea-smelling breath into Hatter's face. Hatter smiled and spun her around until they were in a position where they could waltz.
"Well, now you have," Hatter grinned. And they waltz, with Hatter humming a melody and Alice giggling along.
